About Overtown#

Overtown got its start in the 1890s when Blacks from the South and the Bahamas came to work on the railroad. Overtown was nicknamed Broadway / Harlem of the South due to it being where Black performers stayed during segregation when performing in Miami Beach. I-95 and I-395 cut through the neighborhood in the 1960s, but Overtown persevered. Recently, it has seen the revival of performing arts venues and the arrival of new restaurants. Apartments in Overtown can be found in small buildings and luxury high-rises. Learn more about Overtown.
